1803 Lathe Bench

"Ralph igot the plans from Tools for Working Wood. If I were to make another, I would make the top a little wider front to back, so I could stand a chair on it. I made the base assembled with wedges so I could knock it down easily."

Band Saw Tires

Hi Ralph,I am a co-worker of Fred's. He asked me to respond since we were just talking about this very topic yesterday. The Laguna might be a little on the light side for a boat anchor but I have a lead on an old Crescent 36" that weighs in at around 1500 lbs and might work for that purpose. I'm not sure why your particular saw is giving you trouble. I wonder if it has Friday Afternoon assembly syndrome. I've glued tires on many (~50 or so) band-saws using weather-strip adhesive. It works great…See More

Hurricane Irene

Well Irene went through on Sunday.  We were on the Eastern side of the storm and got almost no rain, however we did get enough wind to knock out the power. Some trees went down blocking several town roads but were removed pretty quickly by the town crew.  I have been running our generator for almost 4 days and getting pretty tired of listening  to it 24 hours a day. Western New England is a very different story as they got hit with the torrential rains as well as the wind.  Most of the rivers…See More

"Dave, Welcome.  Yes it is the same chair only higher.  The leg angles have to change to give the same footprint, and I added a footrest."

Thanks Fred. Once the weather gets out of the mid-70's, I will be back in the shop more and the golf course less. I think it is coming to an end this weekend and be a more normal November in the mid-South. I think I have found a contact for some schedule 80 pipe so I can finally get the steam box built. I will keep you posted.

Hey Fred, hope everything is going well up your way. If it is alright with you, I'd like to add your web site here to MY OTHER FAVORITES on my web site.

Almost called you today to ask what the heck is the center ring on the C-Arm chair. For some reason I could not think of what it was or what it's purpose was. I'm still not real sure but it has been a while since we had an order for the C-Arm, I have forgotten most of what we did in class.

Fred, I sent you an email hoping to hear back from you on a chair I have that needs repairs but I want to make sure it's worth doing since I got the chair for free on the side of the road. Can I send you a picture?

Fred,
Thanks for this. This should be a helpful resource since I'm just starting to look into making my own chair. I'll post my progress as it happens as well as a picture of me for my profile.
A question. In skimming through "Making a Windsor Chair" by Mike Dunbar he says to use white glue. I wonder ,would liquid hide glue, particularly Patricks Brown glue, be a suitable adhesive for chair construction?

Got your link added and will be sending invites out to several people I know who is into woodworking and chair making. Check it out when you get a chance to tell me what you think.

Thanks Fred. I took a few measurements of the legs and stretcher but no patterns as I didn't think of that being new to all of this :) I still have the chair in the shop, she is picking it up Monday.

Hi Fred,

Staying busy as a full time pastor.  Barb and I will be grandparents for the first time in early March.  Looking forward to having a granddaughter.

Sorry, I didn't see your post on my blog earlier.  May, June and July were pretty crazy months for us getting established in Hicksville.  BTW the town got its name from a Mr. Henry Hicks who founded Hicksville, Ohio and another even more prosperous Hicksville on Long Island, NY.

I'll be happy to post a couple pics of my treadle lathe for sure.

Take care,

Jim
